Sitka is a small town in southeast Alaska, whose origins are set deep in history. Russian soldiers came to Sitka in the 18th century in order to expand their fur trade empire. They enslaved the Aleut natives for a brief time before being fought off by the neighboring Tlingit Indians. The Russian soldiers freed most of the Aleut people but stuck around until Alaska was purchased in 1867. The Russians soon left, leaving behind a little piece of themselves.
When your cruise to Sitka docks, be sure to check out the Sitka National Historic Park, known locally as Totem Park. Here they can view a Tlingit Indian Fort up close and step on the ground where the battle between the Russians and the Tlingit Indians was fought. The Russian influence is what you will remember most on your cruise to Sitka and is apparent in much of the town, specifically the Russian Bishop House, one of the oldest examples of Russian architecture in the United States, as well as traditional Russian folk dancers.
