Cruise Vacation to Whittier, Alaska

Whittier is a very small Alaskan town, with a population of under 200 people.  It is the gateway to Prince William Sound and an up and coming port stop for many Alaska cruises.  Wittier, AK was established as a military facility during WWII, though most of its residents today work in the fishing and tourist industries.  Those on a cruise to Whittier will be very intrigued by the Begich Towers, the main residence for most the inhabitant of this tiny community.  This building has a grocery store and a medical clinic and is truly an oddity, even in quirky Alaska.

Another place of interest for those on a cruise to Whittier is the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. At 2.5 miles in length, it is one of the largest tunnels in the world and has the capacity for both train and automobile travel.  The coolest part about the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is that every half hour a switch occurs, allowing for only cars or only Trains to drive along this one lane tunnel at a time.

This tunnel penetrates the mountains in order to connect Whittier to Anchorage and is one of the many reasons this port stop is fast becoming one of the more popular port cities in Alaska’s Inside Passage.

While the climate may be considered mild during the summer months, which are by far the best months to take a cruise to Whittier, rain gear and plenty of layers are recommended.  You never know when a cold spell or a rainstorm will approach and you don’t want to be cold and wet on your cruise to Whittier.

Cruise lines that stop at Whittier include Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Lines and Carnival Cruises.  Tripology can find you a travel specialist to book your cruise to Whittier, Alaska.
