B&B Roma Vaticana

I just returned from two weeks in Italy.  The first week was spent leading a group in northern Italy.  We stayed at the beautiful Lake Maggiore and did day trips to the surrounding area.  I will blog more about this in the coming days.

However, I want to discuss the second week, which was spent in Rome.  Since this part was purely for pleasure, I wanted to stay in one location and just enjoy the city once again.  Normally, I stay in a great little hotel in central Rome when on personal business.  However, based on a recommendation from friends, I stayed at a B&B establishment called "B&B Roma Vaticana".

As the name implies, the B&B is located near the Vatican in an area of Rome called San Pietro.  The district is mostly residential with many restaurants, bars, supermarkets and boutique shops.

I was joined for the week by friends who came down from Paris.  The B&B has two bedrooms (you can either rent one or if you take both bedrooms, you have exclusive use of the apartment).  The apartment itself has been recently renovated; it is quite confortable and well-furnished.  There is also central air-conditioning (which is fairly rare in Rome apartments).  Bathrooms are fully-equipped and have hairdryers.  The bedrooms (each with private bathroom) have a LCD TV and alarm clock.

Since there were the 3 of us, we took the entire apartment.  In addition to the bedrooms, there is a Living Room/Dining Room as well as a full-size kitchen.  The terrace has a table and chairs and is perfect for morning coffee or a glass of wine at sunset.  The view is great as well.  Guests have use of the kitchen, including tea/coffee making facilities, a toaster, microwave and refrigerator.  There is a pecularity in Roman law that does not allow guests to make a full meal from the kitchen (the property is zoned only as a B&B).  However, we bought drinks and snacks and were quite happy.  Going out for dinner was never a problem; after all we were in Italy!

Each morning, the owners (who live in the building) would come to make us a full breakfast.   Daily maid service was included too.  By the way, the owners, who speak English, were most helpful with advice and recommendations.

There is a Metro (subway) stop two minutes away and the bus stop is just in front of the building.  If we were in the mood to walk, we could reach the Vatican within 20 minutes (at a leisurely pace).  Famous landmarks like the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Novana, the Pantheon and the Colosseum were all within a 10 minute subway ride. 

Daily rates begin at $150 for a single (low season) up to $350 for the full apartment (high season).  As we were in the standard season, we paid $305 a night for the entire apartment.  If we had stayed at a decent 3-star hotel (in a triple room) we would have paid about the same.  Instead we had a full apartment for the same price!  

Rates include daily breakfast; daily maid service and all taxes. 

A bonus was that since we stayed a week, the owners offered us a complimentary one-way transfer from/to the airport or the train station.
