Destination Wedding Scotland

From Edinburgh to Glasgow and the Highlands, there are many different ways to experience Scotland on your destination wedding.  The large cathedral in Edinburgh, St. Giles, is a perfect place to share your vows.

The city of Edinburgh itself is a charming view into centuries past, with cobblestone ways and close after close to explore.  Once you’ve spent a few days visiting the castle, Hollyrood Palace, and Arthur’s Seat for a romantic birds-eye-view of the area, visit the highlands or islands.  Be weary of an August wedding, as the Fringe and a few other festivals literally double the city’s population for 4 weeks.  Finding accommodations for your August destination wedding will be difficult and costly in Edinburgh, though the remainder of Scotland is unaffected by the festivals.

The Scottish Highlands are home to mountains, bagpipes, and the Loch Ness monster.  The scenery is unbeatable for a romantic wedding or honeymoon.  The capital, Inverness, is a great place to use as a home base as you travel through the north of Scotland.  And for an even more secluded romantic trip, try a visit to the Shetland Islands.  Of the 100 islands, only 15 are inhabited.

While in Scotland, be sure to drink whisky (they leave out the ‘e’).  When ordering, simply say “whisky;” ordering a scotch immediately identifies you as a tourist.  Also be sure to order haggis, the ultimate Scottish pub fare.  This local favorite is also their national dish.  The comfort food is made of chopped sheep’s heart, liver, and lungs, and is heavily spiced.  It’s served with “neeps and tatties” (Turnips and potatoes, both mashed).  And if you are feeling truly bold, dare your spouse to eat a deep fried Mars bar.
