Destination Wedding Cancun, Mexico

On the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is a romantic, beautiful resort town just steps away from ancient Maya ruins not to be missed. Surrounded by jungle, Cancun was not known outside of fishing communities until 1974, and still retains much of its Mexican culture. In 1974 the Mexican Government developed the city as a new tourist destination due to the high volume of ruins in the area (some now major tourist attractions, others tucked away in the jungle to be found by amorous explorers). And while you are exploring, visit downtown Cancun, which is a great representation of Mexican city life. Eat dinner at any of the restaurants, and hop by a pub or club for an evening with the locals (many speak English, though a bit of Spanish is always a plus).

Peak season runs from December-April, though with the exception of early fall (hurricane season) the weather is lovely year round. Cancun is generally known as the ultimate spring break hotspot, but outside of that month or so that the town is overwrought with beer-hungry, sexually charged 19 year olds, it is quite a lovely place for a destination wedding.

When you are ready to take a break from swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and simply relaxing on the sand, step into the jungle to see the Mayan architecture. Nearby Chichen Itza can be a day trip, but is better explored with an overnight in Chichen. Home of the Kukulcán Pyramid, this vast area of history is truly splendid to share with your fiancé. If you have time, Tulum also houses some astounding Maya ruins. And deep in the jungle you and your wedding party will find Coba, home to the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan.

Cancun offers hotels and resorts in all price ranges, and is a romantic getaway through and through. From thousands of years of history to dense tropical jungle, powdery white sand beaches and crystal blue seas, Cancun may be one of the most romantic destination wedding sites in the world.
