Destination Wedding Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Bay of Islands, New Zealand is a place where history, modern art, and nature collide, and is a charming getaway location for your destination wedding.
In the far north part of New Zealand, the towns that make up the Bay of Islands have a reputation for fishing and sailing, but offer an abundance of other outdoor activities, as well.
You will most likely enter the Bay of Islands in Kawakawa, known for their Hundertwasser public toilets.  A public toilet is probably the last sight you imagined seeking out on your New Zealand destination wedding, but the brand new, Mondrian-style mosaic stalls are worth a peek into.
The town of Russell was nicknamed “the hell hole of the Pacific” in the early 19th century when it was a shore leave destination for whalers, and is still a town where sailors seek refuge from the seas.  Make your way to Waitangi Treaty House, where indigenous Maori signed their government over to the British in 1840.  The house is on a vast estate full of Maori artifacts.  Another highlight is the Kerikeri mission, nearby Rainbow Falls and the Puketi Forest.
Next to the town of Paihia are the Haruru Falls, horseshoe shaped and reputed home of the “taniwha” (water) monster, New Zealand’s own Loch Ness.
Whether you prefer to walk through the forest, fish, sail, kayak or bird watch with your wedding party, take a trip out to the Mine Bay Rock Carving.  Begun in 1970, it took 4 years to etch the likeness of Maori navigator Ngatoroirangi into a 10m tall rock.  The artist took no payment for his work, and it is reachable only by boat.
A nation of more sheep than people known for its eco-tourism, Bay of Islands offers everything you imagine when you think of an adventuresome New Zealand destination wedding.
