Destination Wedding Nassau, Bahamas

Only 35 minutes from Miami, it’s hard to deny Nassau’s convenience as a destination wedding getaway. But in addition to powdery sands and beautiful coral reefs, this capital city is special because it has Bahamian history, culture, nightlife and beauty that other islands lack.

Walk hand in hand along the colonial streets filled with cathedrals and old Victorians to the Queen’s Staircase. Once you’ve climbed her 66 steps you will be rewarded with a view of the island that will remind you what true love is all about.

Back in the 16th century the Bahamas was a pirates den, and Nassau is reputed to be the favorite hangout of Blackbeard himself because of the sheltered harbor. Today you won’t find pirates, but a whole new class of people who flock to the Bahamas to get away: vacationers.

Though the Bahamas are a good place to hold your destination wedding year round, there are some special events in December that make winter an ideal time to go. The Junkanoo Celebration is held every Christmas and New Years and is a glittering display of the local culture. (It was featured in several James Bond films.) This street parade features music, dancing, and of course, costumes.

Regardless of when you choose to visit the Bahamas, Nassau offers everything from shopping (Bay Street has the finest stores) to history (Fort Fincastle has been standing since 1793) and fish (the best, freshest fish can be found at Potters’ Cay Market).
