Star Sightings in Manhattan

Staying in New York in Times Square is always a challenge.  The challenge is finding a hotel to stay in under $300 a night especially between September and December.  Having said this I can recommend the Portland Square Hotel, a small boutique hotel in the middle of Times Square.  With the economy and Wall Street crashing now is the time to find great deals in Manhattan.

You never know who you will meet in Manhattan.  The last time I was in New York, I met and had a conversation with Garret Morris from the old days of Saturday Night Live.

Two years ago, I was in the audience of the David Letterman show watching Martin Short. My husband and I have been in the audience of Regis and Kathy and Regis and Kelly seeing such great people as Steve Martin, Walter Kronkite and Jennifer Anniston.  You can either write ahead for tickets or just walk around the streets by the studios and people will approach you looking for audiences.  Several years ago, we were given tickets to stay through 2 tapings of the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” with Meradith VIera.  They were introducing the new $20 dollar bill and they were giving $1,000 to the person in the audience if someone in the show answered the thousand dollar question correctly.    We were given computer numbers.  In the warm up my number was called and I jumped up and down screaming.

During the second show, my husband’s number was called and we went home a thousand dollars more in our bank account.  The kicker was that we had to sign a confidentiality paper saying we world not tell anyone until after the show aired.  We were escorting a group of 75 people and couldn’t say a word.  Then we found out the show wasn’t being shown in St. Louis so our cousin from New York had to send us a vcr with the show.  It was a very exciting time!

New York has many great museums in this town.  Some of the most interesting are the following, the cloisters and the Museum of the Movie Image in Queens, the Museum of radio and television in Manhattan, an dof course the United Nations and the Empire State Building.  We were in New York several years ago and we were able to visit Ellis Island and go up in the Statue of Liberty.

Then there is the half price ticket booth where you can get Broadway Play tickets for half price, no plastic taken there, just cash and traveler’s checks.

Finally food abound in New York for not a whole lot of money.  There are little shops all around Times Square where you can get breakfast for under $3.00 open 24/7.

One of my favorite places is the Café Edison in the hotel Edison, big portions ad some of the best lox and bagel I have ever tasted, they donor accept plastic, just cash.

Another favorite of mine is Carmines, doing family type small and large plates, again open late.

And, one cannot forget Stardust Diner where the servers are aspiring actors and sign while serving.  SO much Fun!My favorite tour was the Sex and the City Tour I took 2 years ago.  It was during the filming of the movie.  We stopped at the sex store, the bar where you got cosmos and the place where they got their cupcakes.  Then they left you off 2 blocks from the park where the filming was going on.

So, if you want an adventure, Manhattan is the place to go~!
