A Visit to Hasankeyf, Turkey

The Tigris Dam Project is a hotly debated issue in Turkey and the world.  A dam would bring prosperity to a struggling region, but at the cost of 30 villages that would be completely flooded.  The most important of these is Hasankeyf, an ancient city recognized in writings from at least 1800 BC.  The city, which has spanned 9 civilizations, holds many historic treasures for Turkey.  Though there has been talk of moving some of the buildings to higher ground, the cave dwellings and churches may be lost forever.

There is a vocal (and global) campaign against the dam project, but the Turkish government has already broken ground and is proceeding with plans for building.  Fill out a travel request form today so Tripology travel agents expert in Kurdistan travel can help you plan your trip to Eastern Turkey…time may be running out to see this Roman city.

There is a citadel high above the river, but what are really special are the cave dwellings that dot the landscape.  Bring a bottle of water, the hilltop is hot and you’ll want to spend time exploring the ruins.  In addition to the dozens of homes (some are 2 stories!) are the Er Rizk Mosque and Zeynelbey Turbesi Mausoleum.

Once you have visited the cave dwellings, head down to the banks of the Tigris River, where you can wade in the cool sparkling water or enjoy a drink or meal at one of the many stilted restaurants.  Some even have tables set up in the water.  The thatched roofs and lounge pillows offer much needed relaxation after your time in the hills.

There are beautiful ruins of an Arab Silk Road bridge, but at the time of writing they appear to be inhabited by a family.  If you do choose to hike out on the other side of the river, be aware that you will be immediately inundated by Kurdish children asking for everything from notebooks and pens to sunscreen.  It’s best viewed from across the river.

There is only 1 motel in Hasankeyf, and it is not of good quality.  Thankfully, the town is a quick one-hour ride from Midyat and two hours from the larger city of Mardin, which both offer excellent options for accommodations.  Tripology travel agents expert in travel in Turkey and Kurdistan can help you decide which city is right for you on your upcoming vacation.
