Visiting Adana, Turkey

Adana does not warrant a vacation stop of its own, but as many flights come from Istanbul to the city, chances are you’ll be at least passing through on your Eastern Turkey vacation.  Tripology travel agents expert in Kurdistan travel can help you arrange all of your flights to and from Adana, as well as hotel accommodations and car rentals for the entirety of your trip.

If you plan properly, you can be there for the Adana Golden Boll International Film Festival, held each year in June.

The gem of the town and the one thing you should see regardless of length of time spent in Adana is the brand new Sabancı Cami.  Built by one of the wealthiest families in Turkey, the mosque opened in 1998 and can house over 28,000 worshipers.  Built in a style loyal to Ottoman Architecture,  the crispy clean look of the structure may just make you think of Disney’s Cinderella Castle.  It is one of the largest mosques in the Middle East, and one of a few to have six minarets (Mecca has 7).

Other sites of note are the 4th century Roman Stone Bridge and the 16th century Ulu Cami, noted for it’s inner tiling.

While in Adana be sure to eat Adana Kebaps, a bit on the spicy side and generally served with an onion salad.  The city is also famous for Şalgam, a spicy fermented turnip juice that tastes better than it sounds.  Buy it in a bottle, or, if you dare, from one of the street vendors selling it out of large plastic bags.

English is less of a problem in Adana than in other parts of Kurdistan.  Incirlik, a NATO Air Force base, is heavily inhabited by American soldiers and found on the outskirts of town.
