Skiing (or otherwise) in the Transylvanian town of Brasov, Romania

Brasov’s city center is speckled with Carlsberg umbrellas that say “Probably the best city in the world.”  After spending a few hours in the city, you will most likely agree with that statement.  Brasov is home to some of the region’s best mountains for trekking or skiing, as well as beautiful medieval architecture.  Even without speaking the language, one can’t help but feel at home in this friendly, easily navigated city.

The most famous hill in the region is Mt. Tampa, which sports a Hollywood-style “Brasov” sign.  Hike up for some great views of the old city, or, if you are visiting in winter, take a cable car to the top.

Once you’ve returned to the valley, walk through the old city, stopping to take in Strada Sforii (Rope Street), the narrowest street in Europe, the Black Church, and St. Bartholomew Church.  Stop in the Council Square, Piata Sfatului, for a meal or coffee (click for more on Romanian cuisine).

Proceed to the Schei district, home of the St. Nicholas Church, whose yard houses the first Romanian Elementary School.  Once you’re done exploring Brasov proper, hire a taxi or take a bus out to the small town of Bran, home to Bran Castle (of Dracula fame).  The castle-cum-museum will take an afternoon to explore, and gives the history of Vlad the Impaler’s family as well as how the myth of Dracula came to be.

On your way back, stop in the Saxon village of Rasnov, home to another impressive fortress.  The town is also home to horseback riding, hiking, and paragliding in the mountains.  Don’t want to deal with the hassle of booking each item in your itinerary?  Indicate what you want to do on your travel request form and Tripology travel agents will take care of everything for you.

Brasov, as mentioned in the introduction to Transylvania, is reputed to have the best skiing in Romania, at Poiana Brasov.  The 5,000 ft. mountain offers 19 marked runs, as well as many (over 30 kilometers! of) unmarked ones.  The best part?  You can get a six-day unlimited pass for under $200.  Make your travel planning easier by indicating on your free travel request form that you’d like a ski pass as well as cheap flight and hotel accommodations in Brasov, and Tripology travel agents expert in Balkan travel will return a sample itinerary to you within the day.

Brasov is a modern city in spite of its historic look.  Whichever of the 4 distinct seasons you choose to visit in, your trip to Transylvania is sure to be a memorable one.
