A trip to Sighisoara, Transylvania, Romania.

Sighisoara is a typical Transylvanian town set in the hills, best taken in by exploring on foot.  On the Tarnava River, the city is home to Saxons, Hungarians, and Roma.  The entirety of the old (fortified) city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Take the short walk uphill and enter the old town at the Clock Tower, 60 meters tall and built in 1360.  Almost immediately after entering the gate, you will reach Vlad Dracula’s birthplace (though his famed castle is in the town of Bran, just outside of Brasov).  There is also a museum of medieval weaponry.  As you walk around the Citadel, you will notice that it is still alive.  Where some Transylvanian cities have been turned into museums, this Citadel’s outposts are being used by locals as homes and offices, which give Sighisoara a feeling of breathing history.  Some tourist-friendly historic sites to see on your journey through the fortress are the Monastery Church, and the Covered Staircase leading to The Church and School on the Hill.  There are many fascinating old churches outside of the fortification, as well.

If you walk or bike 4 km out of town, there is a beautiful active monastery.  The winding road passing farm after farm is used by as many horse drawn carriages as it is cars, and when you reach the top of the hill the St. Dmitri Monastery is awaiting you.

If you come in the summer, be sure to visit during the 3-day Sighisoara Medieval Festival.  Regardless of when you plan your visit, Tripology travel agents are standing by to help you plan your perfect Transylvanian vacation.  Fill out a free travel request form now to get started.
