Le Marche - The Other Italy

Recently I was fortunate to be among the group of Italy Specialist travel agents and journalists invited by the Italian Tourist Board, Alitalia Airlines and Le Marche Region Tourism to spend several days discovering this magnificent and relatively unknown area of Italy.

Le Marche Region promotes itself as “Italy in One Region” and lies on the eastern side of central Italy, between the Adriatic Sea and the high Apennine mountains. Most of it remains unspoiled by the ravages of mass tourism. Within its borders lie 26 cities of art, countless hilltop villages, the largest number of museums and galleries in Italy, 2 national parks and 5 regional parks (2 along the coast) 180km of glorious coastline with stunning beaches, incredibly scenic vistas to rival Tuscany and so much more! This quick and intense visit was packed from morning to night each day with one amazing sight after another and opened our eyes to this incredibly beautiful “Other Italy.”

Whether you want to admire masterpieces of Renaissance art, music (this area is home to Raphaello and Rossini) and architecture, trek across wild uncharted mountains, bask in the sun on a white sandy beach or hunt out the best of the catch in a Mediterranean fishing port, Le Marche has enough to keep you busy for years. The local marchigiano food and wines will rival those in any other area of Italy and you will rarely have to jostle with hordes of other foreign tourists.
