Gilbert & Sullivan still entertain at Grim's Dyke Hotel in English countryside Part 1

Just twelve miles northwest of London and a world away, the historic Grim’s Dyke Hotel is set on 40 acres in the English countryside and derives its name from an ancient defensive earthwork that runs through this area. This Grade II listed property was once the home of William Gilbert, the librettist half of the operatic duo, Gilbert & Sullivan.

Driving through the wrought iron gates of Grim’s Dyke and down a one-lane winding road through a tunnel of trees takes you to this lovely brick and half-timbered building, surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens (Lady Gilbert’s passion) and walking paths through leafy woods. The scented air, the brilliant green soft cushiony grass, ducks and chattering birds, ponds, an ornamental lake, and numerous woodsy footpaths invite relaxing strolls in the refreshing English air.

Push open the heavy arched front doors to the hotel, and you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into a British novel. Charming sitting rooms, authentically but comfortably decorated, invite relaxation at every turn. Expansive, leaded pane windows open onto views of the gardens and woods. What was once Gilbert’s study where he wrote many of his most famous operettas has been converted to a bar and lounge area. Books still line the shelves, and you can read while nibbling on a tea sandwich, curled on a settee. Relax in one of the sitting rooms or any of the numerous benches in the surrounding gardens and terraces.

Its acclaimed 2-Rosette award-winning dining room (once Gilbert’s incredibly large billiards room) is open for all three meals while the library bar serves light refreshments and beverages throughout the day. Take a stroll through the vegetable gardens which supply much of the fresh produce served in the restaurant. Traditional English varieties of apple and plum trees yield the fruit for their tasty homemade pies and jams.

Tune in tomorrow for part two of my review...
