Gilbert & Sullivan still entertain at Grim's Dyke Hotel in English countryside Part 2

(continued from Part I of yesterday's review) Accommodations can be taken in either the original historic building or the newer annex. As would be expected, the original building exudes more of the original character, charm, and authenticity of Gilbert’s period but with more up-to-date fixtures.

We spent one night in the 800sq ft “Sullivan” suite, once the bedroom and domain of Gilbert’s wife, Kitty. I think I could live in that suite: sitting areas, desk, 4-poster bed, an immense bay window overlooked one set of gardens, while another large leaded window overlooked her garden of rare roses. That particular window has a window seat running the length, and as I sat reading by the open window, the sheer curtains billowed in the country breeze, and I fancied myself a heroine in an English mystery.

Apparently, other guests must feel the same way since Grim’s Dyke Hotel occasionally hosts murder mystery parties—an absolutely perfect venue. It naturally carries on, too, the musical traditions of its former owner with an in-house theatre company staging Gilbert & Sullivan operettas regularly.

On another night during our stay, we occupied the ‘Shaw’ room in the original building. It is the same style as the Sullivan suite but a markedly smaller version. Our 4-poster bed with luxury linens ensured a sound sleep.

The newer annex, in a separate building entirely, houses standard and superior rooms and balcony and garden suites. The garden suites’ terraces open directly onto lawns and gardens (and also feature in-suite Jacuzzi tubs); the balcony suites situate above the garden suites with a similar layout but offer larger balconies, smaller indoor space.

This country manor breathes romance. It’s perfect for those who want to enjoy the best of the English countryside without suffering isolation, for garden-lovers, for walkers, for music-lovers, for the romantics, and for honeymooners. And if you’re looking for a wedding destination, this might well be it. In fact, there were three weddings/receptions scheduled during our stay.

The excitement and glory of London is a short distance away by London Tube, cab, or private car. London Heathrow Airport is a scant 12 miles away. Yet the Grim’s Dyke Hotel is the quintessence of a fine English country manor. This property is definitely worth a stay of at least a few days.
