Villa Diodoro in Taormina--terrific location, amazing views of Mt Etna

Situated next to Taormina’s Giardini Communale, the Villa Diodoro occupies an enviable location. A few streets and a leisurely stroll from the main walkways of Taormina, this hotel has amazing views of the Ionian Sea and snow-capped Mt Etna.

Lush trees, vines, and flowers create a refreshing retreat in the heart of town. The lobby is spacious with marble floors. Front Desk was cheerful and helpful whenever I had a question or two or three. They dispensed detailed maps of Taormina which simplified directions. If you’ve ever been in Italy, you know that directions are frequently punctuated by ‘la la’—‘there’, ‘there’.

Our double-bedded room was ample with an airy patio terrace. The first thing I did was fling open the French doors to snap photos of Mt Etna standing guard over the Ionian Sea and the Villa Diodoro. In warmer weather, the chairs and table on this delightful patio would be well-used.

The combination shower-tub had a terrifically strong shower head which delivered an invigorating spray. No water pressure problems or hot water issues here. Upscale bath amenities complemented the bathroom. And yes, it had a bidet. The towel warmer pipes were an invaluable feature; sure, it toasted my bath towels, but by this time in my travels throughout Sicily, I needed to do a little handwashing of clothes. The towel warmers dried my laundry in a snap. I really appreciate that feature in many of Italy’s hotels because I hate having to pack wet clothes in a plastic bag; they always smell moldy when I unpack them the next day at the next hotel.

The complimentary breakfast buffet was served in the dining room overlooking the ocean. Amazing views. And it was a bountiful buffet, too: cooked eggs, ham, pancetta, assorted cheeses (including fresh mozzarella balls), cereals and yogurts, and perfectly fresh Italian breads accompanied by homemade jams from Sicilian oranges, peaches, and strawberries. Simply a divine way to start a sightseeing day! Individual pots of coffee and frothed hot milk were delivered promptly to our table. Cappuccino was available on request, but I was savoring the robust Italian beans of in my coffee.

The hotel has a “Wellness Club”, but it’s not a real spa by any means. Limited massage therapies are available on request, and there were a few pieces of exercise equipment for the truly dedicated fitness enthusiast who didn’t think he was getting enough of a workout by exploring the hilly streets of Taormina.

The Villa Diodoro Taormina is affordable, a notch above the ordinary, has amazing views, is centrally located in Taormina, and provides a good value for your dollar. Depending on what your exact needs are, Villa Diodoro might be an excellent choice for accommodations to explore Taormina, Castelmola, and the beach below.
