Best Way to See Hawaii - A Cruise

It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t want to visit – and revisit – Hawaii.  Hawaii is often listed as a top destination among travelers.  Our nation’s 50th state, Hawaii is the only state made up entirely of islands.  Home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes and the world’s tallest sea mountain, Hawaii is like no other place on earth.

Here’s what Stanley Plog, the travel industry’s most famous researcher, has to say about Hawaii:
“What a perfect place! It seems to have all the qualities that make a vacation memorable, and none of the problems that can spoil it or ruin it... It scores a perfect 10 with all personality types so that we had to add something to its 5-star rating – a plus sign.”

There are eight major islands in Hawaii, including: Hawai'i (Hawaii’s Big Island), Maui, Kaho'olawe, Lana'i, Moloka'i, O'ahu, Kaua'i, and Ni'ihau. These eight islands that comprise the State of Hawaii are, however, just a small part of a much larger chain of islands. They are also the youngest islands in an immense, mostly submarine mountain chain located on the Pacific Plate and consisting of more than 80 volcanoes and 132 islands, reefs, and shoals. All of these islands make up the Hawaiian Island Chain or Hawaiian Ridge.

The four islands that account for almost all visitors to Hawaii are O'ahu, Kaua'i, Maui and Hawai'i.  What is the best way to see these four islands in a seven night vacation?  The answer--there’s no better way than taking a 7-night cruise abroad Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America.  Norwegian Cruise Line is the only cruise line permitted to operate inter-island cruises of Hawai'i all year round.  Other cruise lines do visit Hawaii occasionally as their ships reposition, but their repositioning cruises would last more than a week.

There are many reasons why taking a cruise to Hawaii is the best way to see Hawaii:
1-In one vacation you experience all four main islands.  No need to pack/unpack at each island.
2-This cruise helps you decide which island to return to for a longer stay.  If you just fly to one of the islands and discover that you don’t like that island, your land based vacation is pretty much ruined.
3-Hawai'i’s food and beverage tend to be more expensive than at other destinations.  Since dining on the ship is included for most venues, a cruise is a much better value than a land-based resort.
4-Save on airfares. Sure you can visit all the islands by land and air, taking short flights from island to island. But each of these flights will cost $50–$150. If you fly among four islands, you’ll spend hundreds of dollars, not including the money you will spend on lodging and food.
5-Save time. With NCL, you get close to 100 hours of port time in Hawaii.  Will you have as much time in the four islands if you need to spend time flying, packing, and unpacking?

In the next blog entry, we’ll talk about the various ports and discuss some of the shore excursions that you can partake while in Hawaii.
