Sailing the Amazon aboard the Royal Princess

We have just returned from a 2 week cruise down the Amazon and up to Fort Lauderdale.

We began in Manaus – today a city of 2 million people.  The  city began during the height of the Rubber tree plantations as a floating city – and many people made so much money they sent their laundry to England to be done.  The first permanent building was an Opera House.

We booked a tour to a settlement where we could visit life on shore. The Amazon river has 3000 kinds of fish and and the Amazon deposits 200 tons of silt per second as it rushes toward the Atlantic Ocean.

This is the beginning of a rainy season and the river is low – we participated in a 2 hour hike along muddy paths that will be done by canoe in only a couple of weeks.

The next visitors will not have to walk this ‘pier’ to get up to the settlement area.

You can see high water lines on the sides of the houses.

We watched Manioc become a pebbly flour that reminded us of eating Grape Nuts.

They also produce tapioca from the same plant.

When we were back on board the Royal Princess we saw the city at low tide - and you can see how high the river will be soon...

Next stop will be in Paratins.
